Brighton - 17 April 2009

So, me and three friends went to Brighton. There was somw great snow in the trees and the harder areas where fewer people venture. We had some great runs, did the park and pipe a few times, went out of bounds once and had to walk over an hour through waist-deep snow (very tiring) to get back on course, and the last run of the day we went off some cliffs, something I had never done. Well, here are the pictures, and other stuff...

Canyoneering - San Rafael Swell

This was a pretty awesome trip. It was freezing and snowing in Provo when we went to the Swell. The first day, we did this 4-5 mile hike called Ding and Dang. We went through Ding, around the back of the mountain, the back down Dang. It required some scrambling. Other than that, we had to bridge, chimney, and stem over roughly 50-70 feet of water. That was tiring, but nobody in our group (25) got wet...the group in front of us wasn't so lucky and changed shoes before they fell in the water and walked.

The second day, we went to Baptist Drawn. We started down Methodist Draw, and then had to backtrack to drop into the canyon. There were a few small pools that we were able to go over using the walls of the canyon. The first rappel is approximately 20 feet. It is slightly awkward and has a small overhang. My left hand shouldn't have been holding onto the rope, and a couple layers of skin came out when it got inbetween the rope and the canyon wall. Parts of the canyon were very narrow. I had to take my pack off and squeeze through. After the first rappel, the second came up quickly. This was an 80 foot rappel. It was pretty nice because the new bolts made it was easier than it would have been. It was awesome. After waiting 1.5 hours for the group, we went to the left, up the canyon and had a small easter egg hunt with smarties, starbursts, and baby ruths. I got a few peices. You could see tons of debris from previous flash floods, such as rocks and logs. There was hardly any water. There was quite a bit of upclimbing and scrambling. Ususally, we would stem up the walls til we got to the top of the section. We got to the end and hiked a few miles to the car, got dinner at Price, and came home. Not bad for two days work. I am glad I missed my classes and hope to do some more canyoneering this summer.
